Helping Children Understand Hard Truths

As we raise our children to be productive humans who are Kingdom Oriented, it is inevitable that difficult things happen in life.

I really appreciated this post on Explaining Hard things to Children. I think every Parent should read it and integrate these things into their own contexts.

Here are two tips to remember:

1) Couch EVERYTHING with your kids in the drama of Creation, Fall and Redemption. This explains pain and loss, but it gives hope.

2) Read the Narnia Series. I know I may get in trouble with some enthusiasts, but read The Magician’s Nephew first. This is the story of the creation of Narnia and it helps to set the tone for the rest of the story. And I am serious here. It is good for your kids and for you if you read together. I know TV is tempting, but seek to make this a priority. Especially this series. The Narnia books help kids and adults to make sense out of the world they are in. The sense of wonder, adventure, devastation, and hope really echoes in all our hearts.
