A Light in Darkness
John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Sometimes we think Jesus came to take us to heaven. Sure, but this is a minor point. He came to be the light of men.
What is it like to walk in darkness? Can you think of a time you stumbled around the house in the middle of the night and it was dark? Do you remember the feeling of confusion? Maybe you stubbed your toe on something and it hurt? A light would have given you a sense of direction and purpose.
This isn’t unlike the human experience. We sometimes hurt ourselves bumping into each other or something else in our way. We do this because in many ways we are stumbling around in the dark looking for hope.
John says that Jesus is the light of men. He comes to give purpose and hope.
How have you hurt yourself or other people because you were too stubborn to admit you were in the dark?
Jesus is the light of the world, because he allows us to admit that we have been stubbornly stumbling around in the dark.
The word of God made flesh.
Pray today and ask Jesus to be your light. (hint: this might include an admission of being in the dark)
