What is Idolatry?

What is Idolatry?

Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator for our hope and happiness, significance and security.
—–

There is no doubt that this one particular sin is the worst sin humanity commits.

This is why the Ten Commandments start with the preface that there is only one God and then command us not to worship others.

God knows that our hearts are never at rest. God knows we are constantly looking for fulfillment, contentment, rest, meaning, and hope.

God knows we are constantly looking anywhere for the answers to this need.

All other sins stem from this one. Eve was not content with walking with God in the garden in the cool of the day. She believed the forbidden fruit offered something more. Adam did not trust in his call to steward creation and instead of smacking the snake in the head, he allowed it to tempt his wife.

Lies, murders, theft, and adultery all happen because the one committing that particular sin believed that SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD was what they needed to feel happy, fulfilled or hopeful.

We all know how those things turn out. They never live up to their promises and they let us down. In fact, idols steal joy and fulfillment. They leave us emptier than we were in the first place.

Idolatry never works, but confession and repentance at the cross will lead you to true joy and hope every time.
